This week’s tutorial is another exciting installment in our “Fundamental Series”. The fundamental frequencies of synth pads. Understanding these fundamental frequencies can be a key factor in bettering your engineer skills.
Pads are commonly used in modern music, especially in Pop, Hip-Hop, & R&B music. This synth-based instrument can add a lot of depth & space to a song. Pads can be a great tool for creating ambient moods too. Though beautiful in sound, pads can take up a ton of room in the mix & they become very greedy when it comes to taking up space on the frequency spectrum.
In this video we discuss a detailed analysis of the fundamental frequencies of pads. We will talk about & demonstrate what specific boosted frequencies will help pads sound full & lush. We also take a look at different frequencies that should be cut to avoid muddiness & overcrowding throughout your mix.
As with any aspect of music, the type of synth pad & song vary with frequencies; however, these key elements will point you in the right direction of lush sounding pads. Your listeners & fans will enjoy the polished sound these techniques bring to your pads without sounding muddy or thin.
Follow along as professional engineer Eric “Realistic” Michael gives you a step-by-step guide on choosing the right frequencies to boost & cut for pads.
